what is kueh?

derived from the hokkien/teochew word koe (粿), 'kueh' refers to a wide variety of desserts; what is considered as 'kueh' can be hard to define exactly. kueh is most commonly spelt in the following ways:

- singapore: kueh
- malaysia: kuih
- indonesia: kue

the following words can also be commonly found in the names of kueh:

- koh (糕): teochew/cantonese for cake
- pan (粄): the hakka word used to describe traditional kueh-like desserts
- putu: derived from the tamil word puttu (புட்டு), a south indian dish consisting of rice and coconut
- apam: derived from the tamil word appam (அப்பம்), a south indian pancake dish
